Polish President Lech Kaczynski has been killed in an aircrash in Russia along with 132 others. The crash occurred in southwestern Russian region of Smolensk today.According to preliminary reports, the plane got caught up in the tops of trees, fell to the ground and broke up into pieces.The Polish Foreign Ministry has confirmed that the head of the Polish army and the head of the Presidential administration were also on board the plane, along with the families of other senior officialsRussia's Emergencies Ministry said the Presidential plane crashed about 300 metres from the runway after hitting tree tops in dense fog. World leaders have reacted with sadness to the death of Polish President Lech Kaczynski, whose plane crashed in Russia early today. U.S. President Barack Obama called the accident a devastating loss for Poland, the U.S. and the world. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said he was saddened by the news of the accident and that the whole world will be saddened by it also. French President Nicolas Sarkozy called Mr. Kaczynski a tireless defender of democracy and liberty and a leader in the fight against totalitarianism. German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed her deep dismay at the Polish president's death as well as all those on board. Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili called Mr. Kaczynski one of his closest friends.
