Polish PM visit to boost bilateral trade ties, defence cooperation

Defence cooperation and expansion in trade ties will be high on the agenda of talks between the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and his visiting Polish counterpart Donald Tusk in New Delhi on Tuesday. Briefing reporters in New Delhi on Monday, spokesman of external affairs ministry, Vishnu Prakash said in that Poland is not only interested in selling the Defence equipment but also transfer of technology and carry repairs of damage aircraft and tank recovery vehicles. He added bilateral, regional and international issues of mutual concern will also figure in the talks. A pact on cultural exchange programme 2010-12 will also be signed during his three days visit which began on Monday morning. Several other agreements are being discussed to widen and deepen the bilateral relationship. On the first leg of his tour, Mr Tusk reached Bangalore where he will exchange views with the captains of industry. The bi-lateral trade between two countries stands at 4.12 billion US dollars. He said Indian companies are investing in Poland and at present 20 major Indian companies in IT are active in Poland. He said the progress in the India European Union Free Trade Area Agreement will also figure in the talks. The sources in the External affairs ministry said that the talks are in an advanced stage as hectic negotiations are going on. He will call on the president and the Vice President and exchange views with the UPA leader Sonia Gandhi and leader of the Opposition Mrs. Sushma Swaraj, besides the External Affairs Minister Mr. S.M. Krishna. He will also exchange ideas with the captains of Industry and will be accorded ceremonial reception at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan in the morning on Tuesday.
