The Assam Government has instructed the district deputy commissioners (DCs) and superintendents of police (SPs) to seize all illegal arms and put behind bars all those having non-bailable warrants issued against them by 10th of the next month. The step has been taken following suggestions by the Election Commission in a bid to ensure free and fair Assembly polls in the State which is round-the-corner. It may be recalled that about eight rebel groups including ULFA and NDFB, who have either expressed their desire for peace talks or are in ceasefire with the Government, still possess a huge quantity of arms.
