In Pune, police suspects that MMS clips and text messages on riots in Assam and Myanmar, have provoked the recent spate of attacks on North-Eastern students in the city. Police have taken prompt action and arrested eleven youths in this connection so far. However, after thorough investigations, police custody of nine accused has been surrendered and judicial custody has been sought for them. Our correspondent reports that around 10 students from North East mostly from Manipur have been attacked by local youths, in Pune recently. The students were beaten by a group of 10-15 people with wooden sticks and iron rods in separate cases of attacks. People across the city have strongly condemned the recent attacks on north eastern students. Several voluntary organizations have come forward to help out these students. Help lines have been started and police are taking all out measures to restore confidence amongst them. Security has tightened in city colleges particularly Ferguson and Poona where the north eastern students are in a sizable numbers. It seems that the north eastern students would get respite soon.
