The Metropolitan Magistrate court today extended the police custody of 23 arrested persons who were involved in the violence in Mumbai last Saturday. The 23 accused will remain in police custody till August 24. The accused were arrested by the crime branch of the Mumbai police last Sunday.The Mumbai crime branch said that police want to find the other people involved in the violence and only those arrested can identify them. Police said that in order to know the intention and the motive behind the violence, the custody was required. According to the police, the crime branch is also probing if the speakers said anything inflammatory to provoke the crowd. Police also informed the court that since hammers, knives, empty cans, and a pistol were seized from the spot after the violence, it is suspected that the violence was pre-planned. The police also said that it is probing if the death of the two persons during the vandalism, was caused due to firing by the violent mob.Two youths were killed and 52, including 44 policemen, injured when a rally called to protest atrocities in Assam and Myanmar, turned violent near Azad Maidan in Mumbai on August 11.
