After the introduction of Police Commissionerate System in Punjab’s three main cities, last Friday, the three Police Commissioners have joined their offices in Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Amritsar, today. Our Jalandhar Correspondent reports that Gaurav Yadav, who was DIG Counter Intelligence has joined as Police Commissioner Jalandhar, Ishwar Singh who was DIG Jalandhar Range has joined as Police Commissioner Ludhiana. Mr. Sharad Satya Chauhan, DIG, Ludhiana Range has joined as DIG, Jalandhar at Mr. Singh’s place. Mr. Verinder Kumar, who was DIG Intelligence has joined as Police Commissioner, Amritsar.<br/>Each of these police commissoners will have powers of an executive magistrate besides other powers. Claiming that the move to start police commissionerate system is aimed at getting rid of the colonial legacy in policing, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, who is also Home Minister, and Local Bodies Minister, Manoranjan Kalia had said the new system will cater to modern policing in view of the fast changing demographic profile and nature of crime in industrialised and high-tech emerging societies. The other states of India where the police commissionerate system had been adopted earlier are Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Haryana.
