Police in Bangladesh baton-charged investors in the capital Dhaka after the country's stock market saw its biggest one-day fall in its 55-year history. Trading on the Dhaka Stock Exchange index was halted after it fell by 660 points, or 9.25 per cent, in less than an hour. The benchmark index had climbed by 80 per cent in 2010 but has since recorded some sharp falls in the past month. The clash between investors and police followed riots over another market slide in mid-December. The protestors vandalised government property, which forced police to use batons against them.
