Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said that Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, PMJDY is an unprecedented initiative by the NDA government which will provide financial services to all households across the country. Briefing media in New Delhi, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that PMJDY is a game changer for the economy as it has provided the platform for Direct Benefits Transfer, DBT which in turn, will help in plugging leakages in subsidies and provide savings to the Exchequer. The Minister also asked state governments to transfer cash directly in the bank account of beneficiaries thereby cutting layers in the delivery process. The achievements made under the scheme has been recognized by Guinness Book of world record. Under the scheme, 11.50 crore accounts have been opened so far. Out of the total accounts opened, 60 percent are in rural and 40 percent in urban areas. The share of female account holders is about 51 percent. A deposit of Rs 9,188 crore has been mobilized in the accounts opened under the scheme so far.
