Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the India's longest all weather Chenani- Nashri road tunnel on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway tomorrow. The tunnel is the longest highway tunnel in India with features like Integrated Traffic Control System (ITCS), Video Surveillance System, Fire Control and FM Rebroadcast System, among others promising fuel savings to the tune of 27 lakh per day.

The tunnel is built on the lower Himalayan range at the height of 1,200 metres. It is a part of National Highway Authority of India's project between Jammu and Srinagar along the NH 44. The tunnel connects Udhampur district with Ramban along the 300 Km national highway. AIR correspondent reports that the Prime Minister is also scheduled to address a public rally in Udhampur in Jammu division.

The 9.2 km long twin tube Chenani-Nashri tunnel constructed at a cost of over 2,500 Crores in over five years, will reduce the distance between Jammu and Srinagar at least by 30 kms in adverse weather conditions. This will also reduce travel time at least by two hours. It will bypass snow and landslide-prone Kud, Patnitop and Batote stretches along national highway and will also provide better connectivity to people in Kishtwar, Doda and Bhaderwah in the Jammu region. The ventilation system in the tunnel will ensure that passengers have access to fresh air as they drive through it.
