PM visits trouble-hit Assam district tomorrow

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will visit the violence-hit Kokrajhar district of Assam on Saturday to review the steps taken to control the situation there. The Prime Minister is likely to review the measures taken by the Government for relief and rehabilitation. Dr. Singh is also likely to visit two relief camps.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi will accompany the Prime Minister.

The Assam Government will submit a memorandum to Dr. Singh, seeking a special package for relief and rehabilitation in violence-hit areas.

Meanwhile, the situation is limping back to normalcy in the violence hit districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang and Dhubri. Talking to newsmen in Guwahati today, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said there were no reports of any fresh incidents except for the two cases in Baksa district in the last 48 hours. Gogoi urged all sections of people to maintain peace and harmony.

The death toll has mounted to 48 today. Night curfew continues in violence-hit districts as a precautionary measure. Thirteen columns of Army, Assam Police and 65 companies of Para-military forces are being deployed to maintain law and order situation. Around 3,92,000 people are being sheltered at 270 relief camps. Additional medical teams along with medicines, have also been deputed to affected districts.
