Prime Minister on Thursday urged the state governments and civic bodies to focus more on providing affordable housing to make cities slum-free. Dr Manmohan Singh said that the challenge can be addressed through public financing as well as encouraging public-private partnership. He said the ambitious Rajiv Awaas Yojna will create space for slum dwellers within the city. Speaking at a conference to mark the 4th anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission in New Delhi, Dr Singh emphasised the need for speeding up the municipal reform process. Calling for better urban infrastructure, the Prime Minister stressed on the need for effective and clean urban transport system.
