PM urges Lanka Prez to ensure normal life with dignity for Tamils

The Prime Minister today urged the Srilakan government to take immediate steps to ensure that the Tamils lead a normal life with dignity. Briefing media persons, Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai said, Dr Manmohan Singh made this point during his bilateral talks with with Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksha on the sidelines of the Rio Summit today.

Mr Mathai said, Sri Lankan President said that the resettlement of displaced Tamils is underway and stated that only 3000 people are lodged in camps, which were established after the war ended. Mr Mathai said, the Sri Lankan President also briefed the Prime Minister on the discussions with various parties on devolution of power.

On Dr Manmohan Singh talks with Nepalese counterpart Baburam Bhattarai, Mr Mathai said Dr Singh reiterated that Indian wants success of democracy in Nepal and expressed the hope that all parties would show the wisdom to work together so that acceptable arrangements are made to complete the drafting of constitutional in time.

Nepalese Prime Minster said, the process of drafting the new constitution was in advanced state.
