President Pranab Mukherjee today emphasised on evolving an educational system which imbibes a scientific culture and increased focus on innovation to compete in a globalised economy. He was inaugurating the 100th session of Indian Science Congress in Kolkata today. Underscoring on the need for innovation, he said it was vital for the country if the country has to compete in a globalised economy.
Referring to new science, technology and innovation policy, he said, it lays the road map for the development of an ecosystem for innovation and for encouraging, recognising and rewarding the innovators in society.
He said that productive engagement of the youth in agriculture, manufacturing and value-based services holds the key for a balanced growth of the country.
In his address, Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh asserted that transformation of the agricultural sector should be the top priority of the country's public policies. This includes science and technology. Dr. Singh said the 12th five-year plan has targetted an annual growth rate of four per cent per annum for the agriculture sector. He added this is important to achieve food security.
Dr. Singh called upon scientists to make new breakthroughs in water saving technologies of cultivation, enhancement of land productivity and development of climate resilient varieties of seeds.
