PM unveils cash transfer scheme; asks ministries to ensure its success

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has unvailed direct cash transfer scheme and asked concerned Ministries for its successful implementation for the benefit of the poor sections. Prime Minister held a meeting of cash transfer committee to review the progress of the scheme which aims to check pilferage and corruption in distribution of subsidised items by direct cash transfers into the accounts of beneficiaries in New Delhi yesrerday. In his closing remarks at the first meeting of the National Committee on Direct Cash Transfers Dr Singh also asked the Finance Ministry and the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to work together to ensure the success of the scheme. He said that Government will start direct cash transfer of subsidies into beneficaries' bank accounts in 51 districts across the country through the Aadhar based system from 1st of January next year. Dr. Manmohan Singh said that Direct Cash Transfer will open the doors for eliminating waste, cutting down leakages and targeting benificiaries better.
Dr. Singh said, the government spends huge funds on schemes and programmes for the benefit of the common man and the under-privileged sections of society. He said, the funds provisioned for direct benefits like pensions, scholarships and health-care benefits must reach the intended beneficiaries without delays and leakages.
The Prime Minister urged the individual ministries to work in right earnest for implementation of the Direct Cash Transfers initiative. Dr. Singh said, it should be ensured that every rupee spent by the Government goes to those who really deserve it. Prime Minister pointed out that Addhar platform and financial inclusion are the twin pillars for the success of Direct Cash Transfer Scheme.
Dr. Singh said, the banking system needs to integrate the post office network, especially in the rural parts of the country to move closer towards the goal of financial inclusion.
