PM to visit BARC today

The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will make a brief visit to Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) at Tarapur today. It is located 100 KM away from Mumbai. He will inaugurate the second Power Reactor Fuel Reprocessing Plant at BARC Facilities at Tarapur. The plant would replace the existing 10-tonne per annum facility at BARC.The new facility is capable of reprocessing 100 tones of spent fuel a year and would greatly enhance India's presence in the select club of countries using the closed fuel cycle technology. The plant is for indigenous nuclear reactors and is not under any foreign safeguard agreement. The reprocessed spent fuel would be re-used as fuel and for medical and other purposes.Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary of Department of Atomic Energy Dr. Srikumar Banerjee, Director of BARC Dr. R. K. Sinha, and Dr. S. K. Jain who is the CMD of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) will be present during the occasion.
