PM to visit Assam on July 28 to review steps to control Kokrajhar violence

The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is visiting the violence hit Kokrajhar District of Assam on Saturday to review the steps taken to control the situation. Dr. Singh is likely to review the majors taken by the Government for relief and rehabilitation.

Lower Assam districts of Kokrajhar Chirang and Dhubri have been witnessing group clashes for the last six days. Indefinite Curfew and shoot-at-sight orders are in force in the worst-affected areas . Night curfew is also on in Chirang and Dhubri. The violence has claimed more than 40 lives and led to dislocation of lakhs of people.

Meanwhile, talking to reporters in New Delhi this afternoon, the Home Secretary Mr. R.K. Singh said that the situation is peaceful in the disturbed areas. He said that besides 42 companies of Para-military forces have already been deployed to assist the state government in normalising the situation, additional 22 companies are reaching these areas by the evening followed by five more companies tonight. Mr. Singh said that re-settlement of the dislocated people is being carried out on war footing while efforts are being made to provide amenities to the people living in the camps.
