PM to take final call on constituting JPC for probe in IPL affairs

Prime Minister will take a final call on constituting a Joint Parliamentary Committee to probe the IPL controversy. A decision to this effect was taken in the Congress Core Group meeting, chaired by the Party President, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi last evening. Earlier the opposition stepped up pressure on the Government on alleged scam in the IPL ahead of the crucial meeting of its Governing Council on Monday. The agitated opposition stalled proceedings for most of the time in both Houses of Parliament seeking a JPC probe into the alleged scam. <br/><br/>Leader of the Opposition, Sushma Swaraj, while making a forceful plea for setting up of the JPC, alleged that there is a question mark over the involvement of two central ministers. She also alleged that skeletons are coming out of cup board daily regarding the scam. <br/>Mr Sharad Yadav of the JD-U, while supporting her demand, said the IPL has become a platform for loot and betting.<br/><br/>Mr Basudeb Acharya of the CPIM said that startling revelations are pouring in every day and a large number of people are involved in what he described as the biggest gambling in the country. He said there is an urgent need to fix those responsible for the scam. Mr Gurudas Dasgupta of the CPI described the scam as unparallel in the history of Independent India. <br/><br/>Responding to the opposition demand, the Leader of the House and Finance Minister, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee said the decision on setting up of the JPC cannot be taken instantly and the matter requires due diligence. The main opposition BJP for the first time demanded resignation of Union Ministers Sharad Pawar and Praful Patel for their alleged involvement in the IPL scam.<br/><br/>Talking to reporters outside Parliament, Yashwant Sinha said that an impartial inquiry is not possible unless the Ministers under cloud resign. The party spokesman, S.S.Ahluwalia however evaded a direct reply on the resignation demand. <br/><br/>Another BJP leader Prakash Javdekar sought an explanation from the government on the reported diversion of a flight by Civil Aviation Minister's daughter for an IPL team. <br/>The Janta Dal (United) leader Shivanand Tiwari also demanded resignation of Sharad Pawar and Praful Patel for their alleged involvement in the scam. CPIM leader Sitaram Yechury said that the entire opposition is united in its demand for a JPC probe in the alleged scam. <br/><br/>CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta said opposition members are meeting the Prime Minister and the President next week to press for their demand. Reacting to the JPC demand, NCP Chief, Mr. Sharad Pawar said, he is not worried as he has nothing to do with IPL. Reports say, the Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has accused IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi of having acted as an extra-constitutional power during Vasundhara Raje's rule. <br/>BCCI Vice President Rajiv Shukla met Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on the ongoing IPL controversy. Mr Shukla held two meetings with the Prime Minister on the issue this week. <br/><br/>Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray accused Union Minister and former BCCI chief Sharad Pawar for the IPL mess. In a related development, former BCCI President, A.C.Muthiah challenged the Madras High Court order in the Supreme Court upholding the validity of the amendment by the Cricketing body to exclude IPL and Twenty20 tournaments from its purview. <br/>Meanwhile, Comptroller and Auditor General has slammed Maharashtra Government over non levy of entertainment tax on IPL matches. <br/><br/>In a related move, Income Tax Department has issued notices to Kolkata Knight Riders and game plan sports to appear before it in connection with recent search operations.<br/>
