PM to raise nuclear terrorism, Pak and other issues with President Obama

The Prime Minister is raise nuclear terrorism and situation in Pakistan with US President Obama. Dr. Manmohan Singh, who had a brief stopover at Frankfurt on his way to Washington to attend the Nuclear Security Summit, will also discuss Afghanistan, G20, economic recovery and maritime security issues would also be discussed.<br/><br/>Official sources on board the Prime Minister’s special aircraft told AIR Special Correspondent Alpana Sharma that India has been a consistent advocate of a world free of nuclear weapons and will work with the United States and other countries attending the summit for the success of the Nuclear Security Summit hosted by President Obama.<br/><br/>Dr. Manmohan Singh would be having an important bilateral meeting with President Obama before the summit where wide ranging issues would be discussed including Afghanistan, G20, economic recovery and maritime security issues. <br/><br/>At the official level talks, India will seek the extradition of David Coleman Headley and the access to Headley as per the legal system. Official sources said that India is not for sanction against Iran and would be participating in the June 2010 meeting called by Iran.<br/><br/>On the civil nuclear liabilities bill, official sources said that it has been brought in for quick and effective compensation in case of accidents and there is no cap on liabilities.<br/><br/>On the reprocessing of spent fuel, official sources said that the reprocessing arrangement is an important milestone in the India-US partnership and reprocessing spent fuel will be done under IAEA safeguards.<br/><br/>Washington is all set to welcome the heads of states and government from over forty countries to the Nuclear Security Summit that will discuss the steps to counter the threat of nuclear terrorism.<br/><br/>AIR Correspondent Sarita Brara reports from US Capital that a hectic schedule awaits for the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, who will be arriving in Washington on Sunday.<br/><br/>The same day later in the night he will have one to one talks with US President Barrack Obama. <br/><br/>This will be his second meeting with Obama in less than six months. The two leaders will also bilateral ties and discuss issues of regional and global concern.<br/><br/>India has contributed substantively to the preparation of the summit and took part in all the three meetings of the sherpas to work out the knitty gritties of the summit. <br/><br/>India piloted a resolution at the UN way back in 2002 on preventing terrorists from acquiring weapons of mass destruction and is also party to global architecture for of nuclear security like the convention on the physical protection of nuclear material and the global initiative to combat nuclear terrorism of 2006. <br/><br/>It has been active in the works of the nuclear watch dog IAEA on setting and enforcing standards on physical protection of nuclear material and facilities as well as combating illicit trafficking in nuclear material.<br/><br/>It has an impeccable record on nuclear non proliferation and it is this backdrop that India would be participating in the summit that could contribute to the reduction of the nuclear terrorism.
