PM to leave on three-nation tour on Monday

The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh leaves on a three-nation tour to Japan, Malaysia and Vietnam tomorrow morning to give a further impetus to India's Look East Policy. A high level delegation including External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna, National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon and a business delegation led by Mukesh Ambani will be accompanying him.His main engagement in Tokyo will be his Summit talks with his Japanese counterpart Naoto Kan slated for Monday. Cooperation in Civil Nuclear Energy, High Technology Trade, Security and the role of Group of four countries – G-4 – to push urgent reforms at the UN Security Council are among the issues which are likely to come up at the talks. The high light of the visit will be the announcement of the much awaited conclusion of the negotiations of Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, CEPA, with Japan. Some MoUs to further their bilateral cooperation including the one on easing visa restrictions are likely to be signed during the visit. AIR correspondent looks at the Indo – Japan ties.Although the exchanges between Japan and India date back to sixth century, it was in 2006 that the two giant economies of Asia decided to put their relationship on a high pedestal. Today, India is the largest recipient official development aid from Japan. On the economic front, trade turnover was to the tune of over twelve billion dollars in 2008-09 but it witnessed a decline of more than 14 per cent in the last fiscal. It is believed that once CEPA is put in place. The trade between the two countries will increase manifold. India and Japan, which have similar views on many issues, are part of a Group of Four which is working to push urgent reforms in the UN Security Council. In the geopolitical situation India's relations with Japan are of significant importance for balance of power in the region.AIR correspondent Bhuvan Khanduri reports from Tokyo that the city is all set to give a warm welcome to Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.’Indian Ambassador to Japan, Hemant Kishan Singh told AIR correspondent that the said that the economic relationship between the two countries is growing rapidly. He said that expected announcement of the CEFA is awaited eagerly.On civil nuclear cooperation, the Ambassador said that the talks on the issue are proceeding well.
