Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 3rd Asia Ministerial Conference on the Tiger Conservation in New Delhi this afternoon. More than 700 tiger experts, scientists, managers, donors and other stakeholders from all Tiger Range Countries will discuss issues related to tiger conservation and anti poaching strategies during the three-day event.

Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar has said, the government has allotted 380 crore rupees to Project Tiger in the current fiscal year, which is an all-time high. He said India is committed to the conservation of Tiger, which is the national animal. Mr Javadekar also said due to the concerted efforts of the government and other stakeholders, more than 70 per cent of the global wild tiger population is in India.

The number of tigers in the wild has risen for the first time in more than a century, with 3,890 tigers counted in the latest global census, according to wildlife conservation groups like World Wildlife Fund. The last count revealed that India alone is home to 2,226 tigers. This increase can be attributed to multiple factors, including rise in tiger populations in India, Russia, Nepal and Bhutan, improved surveys and enhanced protection.

Even as the rise is cause for celebration, the status of Tiger still remains endangered. The conference beginning today is the latest step in the Global Tiger Initiative process that began with the Tiger Summit in Russia in 2010. In the Summit, governments agreed to the Tx2 goal that is double tiger numbers by 2022.
