PM to formally inaugurate 3rd commonwealth conference

20th conference of Speakers and Presiding officers of the Commonwealth countries begins in New Delhi on Monday evening. Briefing reporters, the Lok Sabha Speaker Mrs. Miera Kumar said that the conference will open with the meeting of the standing committee in which detailed discussion will be held on the agenda of the conference. 50 Speakers and presiding officers of the legislatures will be participating in this conference to be formally inaugurated by the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on Tuesday. A commemorative stamp will be released on the occasion. Early on Tuesday an exhibition will also be thrown open by the speaker Mrs. Miera Kumar, showcasing the evolution of Indian democracy.<br/><br/> Talking about the objectives of the conference Mrs. Miera Kumar said that that three standing committees have been formulated to prepare issues to be taken up at the plenary. Role of speaker as a mediator, use of technology in the functioning of parliament and role of speaker in its administration will be focus of discussions. Fostering and encouragement of impartiality by the presiding officers, promotion of knowledge and understanding of parliamentary democracy and adaptation of modern technology besides development of parliamentary institutions will also hog the limelight. AIR correspondent reports that the presiding officers of many countries have already arrived in New Delhi to participate in the 3rd such conclave being hosted by India.
