PM to discuss terrorism, developments with Karzai during his visit

Wide ranging talks of mutual concern including development in the region and fight against terrorism are likely to dominate the agenda when Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh meets Afghan President Hamid Karzai in Kabul. In his departure statement, the Prime Minister noted that India cannot remain unaffected by developments in Afghanistan. He said that the quest of the Afghan people for peace, stability and reconciliation needs the full support of all countries in the region and the international community. The Prime Minister asserted that if the region has to prosper and move ahead, Afghanistan must succeed in rebuilding itself. Dr. Singh reiterated India's commitment to assist the people of Afghanistan against all odds. He said that India's development assistance commitment to Afghanistan is about 1.5 billion U.S. dollars. Dr. Singh is scheduled to hold one-to one talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai followed by delegation level talks. The two countries are likely to sign a joint declaration on strengthening bilateral ties and a way forward for secure and prosperous Afghanistan. Prime minister’s visit comes soon after the killing of Osama Bin Laden and the scheduled beginning of withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan in July. He is also likely to announce a new aid package for the war-torn country. India is the sixth largest donor for the reconstruction of Afghanistan. This is the second visit of Dr. Singh since 2005 and comes at a time when Afghan government is pushing for reconciliation with Taliban groups. India has maintained that any such process should be Afghan-led and should be with those elements which renounce violence and accept Afghan constitution.
