PM to attend India-ASEAN and E.Asia Summits at Bandar Seri Begawan in Brunei today

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will attend the 11th India-ASEAN Summit and 8th East Asia Summit at Bandar Seri Begawan in Brunei today. The Prime Minister arrived in Brunei last evening. He was received at the airport by Haji Mohammad Abdoh, Permanent Secretary in the office of the Prime Minister of Brunei. Dr. Singh is also scheduled to meet the Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott on the sidelines of the summit today. Supply of uranium to India by Australia is likely to figure prominently during their talks. Our correspondent reports that the India-ASEAN and East Asia summits hold special significance for India in its Look East policy. He adds that India is one of the ASEAN dialogue partners, alongside seven other countries. The ASEAN-India Summit has been held annually since 2002. The 11th ASEAN-India Summit will be the first Summit after the elevation of the relationship to a strategic partnership. It would mark the maturing of this partnership as it enters its third decade. The East Asia Summit is the foremost forum for promoting peace, stability and prosperity in the dynamic Asia Pacific region. A forum of ten ASEAN and eight other countries, the East Asia Summit integrates a market of more than 3 billion people with a combined GDP of 17.23 trillion dollars. India’s initiative in establishing the Nalanda University in Bihar has also received wide support in the region. Dr. Singh will leave for Jakarta in Indonesia later in the evening on the the second leg of his visit.
