PM to attend Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen

The Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh will attend the Copenhagen Summit on climate change on the 18th of this month. According to PMO, Dr Singh will undertake a two-day visit from the 17th. Nearly 80 Presidents and Prime Ministers from across the world are expected to attend the two-day Summit on 17 and 18. India has already announced that it will voluntarily reduce the emission of green house gases by 20 to 25 percent by 2020 but not accept any legally binding targets. Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh told Parliament that India is willing to do more if a comprehensive and equitable agreement is arrived at the Copenhagen summit. While maintaining that there will no compromise on protecting India's interest, Mr Ramesh said India can show flexibility on support to mitigation action depending on the concessions it gets. Our correspondent says the decision reflects the seriousness attached by India to the meet where it is expected to play a crucial role.
