Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stressed the need to develop a mechanism and find out a permanent solution to the issue of Indian and Sri Lankan fishermen straying into each others waters.<br/><br/>In his meeting with visiting Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena over a working dinner yesterday evening, Mr Modi appreciated Mr. Sirisena's efforts to promote reconciliation in the island nation so that all sections of Sri Lankan society can live with equality and dignity.<br/><br/>There are 34 Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody and 96 Indian boats at present. India has zero Sri Lankan fishermen in its custody and 13 boats of that country. The Prime Minister and the Sri Lankan President discussed all issues of bilateral interest, in particular the problems being faced by Indian fishermen, the status of various economic projects being implemented by India and efforts to further increase trade and investment. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup said, both the leaders appreciated the meeting of the India-Sri Lanka Joint Commission led by two Foreign Ministers. The visiting dignitary expressed appreciation for the assistance provided by India to Sri Lanka for various developmental projects being implemented by New Delhi.<br/><br/>Mr Sirisena, who arrived in New Delhi yesterday on a two day visit will leave for Ujjain today. Mr Modi will accompany him.
