The Prime Minister today called for addressing the problem of deficiency in quality of teaching in schools, colleges and universities. Dr. Manmohan Singh said that there is a need to find ways to attract the best talent in the faculties of India's premier institutions. He said that there is difficulty in finding top level professors for the newly created institutions and this state of affairs cannot be allowed to persist. Speaking at a function to mark the National Education Day on the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad in New Delhi, Dr. Singh said that the realization of Right to Education does not merely depend on expansion of educational infrastructure but the availability of trained teachers with commitment to their profession. He said that an additional million teachers will be required to implement the act on Right to Education. He said that a system of education built on the premises of quality and equity is central to India's rapid progress as a modern and dynamic society. He said the Government is committed to providing good quality education to every child specially those belonging the unprivileged sections of the society.In his speech, the Human Resource Development Minister Mr. Kapil Sibal said that the country faces three major challenges of accesses to education, as well as equity and quality.Speaking on the occasion,the Director General of UNESCO Mr. Koichiro Matsuura said that Maulana Azad stood for al round development of human personality and it is this holistic vision which guides UNESCO's activities in the field of education. He also appreciated the political will of the government in India to promote education at all levels.
