PM stresses need of sensitizing judiciary on gender issues

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today stressed the need of sensitising the judiciary on the gender issues. He called for self-introspection about laws and justice delivery system in the wake of the Delhi gangrape incident late last year.

Talking to reporters after inaugurating the Conference of Chief Minister and Chief Justices, Dr Singh said the Government had moved expeditiously to respond to the felt sensitivities of the people in the aftermath of “this gruesome tragedy of Delhi”. The Prime Minister, however, stressed that a great deal more needs to be done to check offences against women.

Dr. Singh said access to justice through empowerment of its citizens was the defining measure of a progressive nation and a just society.
