PM stresses need for shifting to renewable energy to accelerate N-power

The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh has stressed the need for food security and providing affordable health care to overcome diseases. He was inaugurating the five day long 97th Indian Science Congress in Thiruvananthpuram today.<br/><br/>Prime Minister said, India must achieve energy efficiency and shift to renewable energy. He underlined the need for a plan for accelerated nuclear power. He said, renewable and clean energy supplies will need to play a much bigger role than what they are doing now. Pointing out that the landmark agreement with the Nuclear Suppliers Group lifting long-standing restrictions on transfer of nuclear fuel to India has paved the way for an accelerated nuclear power development programme, he said solar and nuclear energy supplies will also have to increase considerably. <br/><br/>Dr. Singh said the Government has decided to launch Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission for setting up of 20 thousand megawatts of solar power generation capacity by 2020. He said water resources management is another important area as percapita availability of water is declining because of population increase. He called upon the Scientists to meet the challenges of climate change. <br/><br/>About seven thousand delegates, including Nobel laureates and eminent scientists from across the globe are attending the conference. Dr. Singh asked Indian Scientists working abroad to return to the country to convert the "brain drain" to "brain gain". <br/>Dr. Singh announced that the government is considering revision of the amount of doctoral and post-doctoral fellowships. He said, the National Science and Engineering Research Board will start functioning by March. The Board is expected to function as an independent body comprising eminent scientists which would allot funds for research projects.
