PM stress need for Security Council reform

The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh stressed the need for early reforms in United Nations, particularly expansion of the Security Council. In his departure statement prior to leaving for New York to participate in the United Nations General Assembly session, the Prime Minister said, terrorism and non-traditional threat to international security are threatening states and the international political and social order. He said, it is time for the United Nations to resume its global leadership role and called upon countries to act in concert to address the challenges of terrorism and piracy. Pointing out that India has become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council after a gap of 19 years, the Prime Minister said, India's efforts in promoting international peace and security, have enriched the Council's deliberations and enhanced its effectiveness on the global economic uncertainties. The Prime Minister said, the world economy is in the midst of an economic slowdown coupled with all its attendant problems including inflationary pressures. On the upheaval in the Middle East, the Prime Minister said, there is uncertainty about the shape to come in this crucial part of the world in the period ahead and said, the Palestinian question remained unresolved. The Prime Minister said, during his 5-day stay in New York, he looks forward to holding bilateral meetings with the President of Iran, South Sudan and Sri Lanka, besides the Prime Ministers of Japan and Nepal.
