PM, Sonia in Assam to take stock of the flood situation

The Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Mrs. Sonia Gandhi have reached Jorhat in Assam today to take stock of the flood situation. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi welcomed them at Raroiya Airport in Jorhat. Dr. Singh and Mrs. Gandhi will conduct an aerial survey of flood affected areas of Upper and Central Assam. From Jorhat, they will reach Guwahati, before returning to Delhi. Dr.Singh will also review the flood situation with the Chief Minister and his Cabinet colleagues at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport at Barjhar in Guwahati.
The Prime Minister has already announced an ex-gratia of one lakh rupees to the kin of those killed in flood. The Chief Minister also declared an ex-gratia of one lakh rupees each to the families of those killed in flood and landslides. So far, 61 people have lost their lives in flood and another 16 in landslides. 16 teams of National Disaster Response Force have been deployed for relief and rescue works in the flood affected areas. The flood has affected all the 27 districts of the state. More than 19 lakh people of 2 thousand, 166 villages are affected in the recent wave of flood. Flood also damaged 43 thousand hectares of cropland. The Assam government has announced to provide free paddy saplings to the affected farmers. Official sources said that 4 lakh, 85 thousand inmates are being sheltered at 768 relief camps. The Health department also deployed Mobile Medical Units and Medical teams to prevent any kind of water and vector borne diseases. National Rural Health Mission has sanctioned 75 lakh rupees to 21 districts to purchase essential medical items. Many a cattle have also been swept away in flood. Two rhinos and a few deers drowned at Kaziranga National Park. Flood also submerged Kaziranga National Park and Pabitara Wildlife Sanctuary. The Veterinary department has also established a temporary 45 thousand cattle camp.

The Prime Minister has announced adhoc assistance of 500 crore rupees to the flood-hit Assam. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati today after an aerial survey of flood hit areas, the Prime Minister said, a Central team will assist the damage caused by floods to the state. Dr. Singh expressed satisfaction over rescue and relief operations taken by the state government and the defence forces. Dr. Singh said that 4.84 lakh people have taken shelter in 768 relief camps. All of them are being provided with mobile health centres.
