Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has said that there is a need to improve the structure of public and private partnership arrangement to ensure that they are transparent and adequately safeguard public interests. Dr. Singh said, the reports of the CAG are taken very seriously by the media, by the public, by the government and by the Parliament. He said, this casts a huge responsibility on the institution to ensure that its reports are accurate, balanced and fair. The Prime Minister said this while, speaking at the function organised to mark the 150th anniversary celebrations of CAG of India.In her inaugural speech, President Pratibha Devisingh Patil said auditors should partner the government and pay specific heed to social sector programmes to ensure objectives of social justice and equity are met. She said the comptroller and auditor general's services should be readily available and be used by the government to make midcourse corrections and improve service delivery. President Patil said public auditors have a major challenge to respond competently to growing expectation of the stakeholders. The President emphasised that public financial accountability is essential for rooting out corruption. President released a commemorative postage stamp to mark the occasion. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh released a vision and mission statement of the CAG. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Public Accounts Committee Chairman Murli Manohar Joshi also spoke on the occasion.
