The Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh said that the government is determined to take corrective action to fight the menace of corruption. He said, in the past several months developments like 2G spectrum allocation, procurement and contracting issues related to commonwealth games and similar issues in state governments have brought public focus on the issue of corruption in public life. The Prime Minister said, such developments have caused many concerned citizens to worry about the state of governance and the pervasiveness of corruption and these are legitimate concerns. Dr. Singh said government is taking steps to prevent such developments in future and reduce discretionary and arbitrary use of power by public officials. Releasing a report card on completion of two years of UPA-II government in New Delhi last night, he said the due process of law is already in motion to tackle corruption. Dwelling on the economic issues Dr Singh said in the past seven years, Indian Economy has grown at an unprecedented rate of 8.5 per cent. He said this historic performance has been in the face of a grave financial crises and slowdown in the world economy and it has been achieved overcoming the problem of high energy prices and rising food prices. The Prime Minister said, if each one of Indians continues to work hard with dedication, commitment and honesty, India will soon emerge as the fastest growing economy of the world. He said the most immediate challenge is to sustain the growth process while keeping inflation under check. Referring to the rise in world fuel and food prices, Dr. Singh said to control the same is not just prudent fiscal management but also a national security imperative. The Prime Minister said, as a member of the group of 20 and presently of the United Nations Security Council, India is being called upon to provide global leadership in dealing with the challenges of development and international security. Addressing the gathering, the UPA chairperson Mrs. Sonia Gandhi said that the government is committed to transparency, accountability and probity in public life. She said though the issue of corruption was highlighted very much, but unfortunately some of the opposition parties don't share the same standard of probity as being practiced by the UPA government. She said, the government will bring the Lokpal bill in the coming monsoon session of Parliament. Congratulating the Prime Minister for the completion of 7 years in office, Mrs Gandhi said the government is determined to fulfill the expectations of the people. She said in the recently concluded Assembly elections, the UPA has won three out of the five states.
