PM says, Govt has not taken any view on use of air power against Naxals

The Prime Minister has said that the government has not taken any view on using air power against naxals. Dr. Manmohan Singh said that all options are reviewed from time to time but it is too close to the incident of Dantewada attack for the existing policy of fighting naxals to be modified. He was replying to questions from the media on the sidelines of a function at Rashtrapati Bhawan to present Padma Awards on Wednesday.<br/><br/>Earlier, the Home Minister P Chidambaram said that the Government may have to reconsider the stand not to use the air force in the anti-naxal operations. He said, there will be no let-up in the offensive against the naxals. However, answering another question, he said, at present there is no mandate to use the Air Force or any aircraft. But, if necessary, the governmnet will have to revisit the mandate to make some changes.<br/>In Ahmedabad, IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal P V Naik said, the IAF will be ready to join the operations against the Naxals if a decision is taken by the Government.<br/><br/>The West Bengal Government is considering changes in strategies of joint operations of security forces against Maoist in the back drop of Chhtisgarh episode. The state Director General of Police Mr. Bhupinder Singh hinted this in Kolkata yesterday. Talking to newspersons, he said that, the Government will take final decision in this regard after getting enquiry report of the Chhtisgarh incident. The West Bengal Government has sounded high alert in Maoists infested three district West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia districts in the state to avert any untoward incident.
