The Prime Minister took a detailed review of the Indian Railways and directed it to step-up safety, punctuality and cleanliness. In a meeting held with Ministry of Railways in New Delhi on Wednesday, the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh expressed concern at recent accidents at unmanned level crossing gates, and directed that the signage and road surface at the level crossing should be in accordance with laid down norms. Dr. Singh also asked the Railways to give special attention to the supply of fertiliser for farmers, and to expeditiously move food grains for the public distribution system from Punjab and Haryana, for consumption in the rest of the country. He emphasised the need for no slackening in movement of Coal to power plants, so that sufficient stock can be built up before the monsoon.
