Prime Minister Manmohan Singh reviewed the foodgrains stock situation against the backdrop of deficient monsoon so far this year.
Food Minister K V Thomas told reporters after the Prime Minister meeting that they reviewed the foodgrains situation, effect of monsoon failure, export, procurement, modernising public distribution system , PDS.
He said the situation on all these issues would again be reviewed after 15 days .
Monsoon rain the life line of Indian agriculture, have been deficient by 21 per cent so far this year across the
country and the situation is worrisome in Karnataka and central Maharashtra.
The deficient rainfall has affected the sowing of Kharif crops, mainly paddy, pulses, coarse cereals and oilseeds.
Food Minister K V Thomas added that Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh also discussed with his senior ministerial colleagues on food security bill and issues related to the proposed Act to be adopted before a Parliamentary panel which is examining the Bill.
