PM reviews flood situation in Jammu region; death toll rises to 116

The Prime Minister today reviewed the flood situation in Jammu region at a high-level meeting attended by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and top officials of the state.

Mr. Narendra Modi who arrived in Jammu Sunday morning, had meeting as flood situation in Kashmir worsened with many parts of capital Srinagar, including the Army cantonment, All India Radio and Doodarshan offices were inundated and vital roads submerged.

The embankments of River Jhelum were breached at many places due to rise in water level, submerging areas.

Water has also seeped into important installations like Civil Secretariat, and High Court in the heart of the city.

Vital roads including the airport road.

Access to main hospitals have been cut off due to the flooding of the roads.

AIR Srinagar Correspondent visited some nearby localities and saw thousands of people from water-logged areas being moved to safer places but many people have been trapped in upper stories of their homes in low-lying areas of the city.

Communication system has been disrupted with all almost all private cellular networks out of order.

The landline telephone network has also been badly affected. Electricity and water supply has remained disrupted in affected areas for the past six days now.

Torrential monsoon rains, which triggered flooding, landslides and house collapses in Jammu and Kashmir, have so far claimed 116 lives in the state.

The army has launched relief and rescue operation on war footing. 850 personnel have been airlifted so far in the flood affected regions of the State.

Over 400 were evacuated on Saturday.

Today One more aircraft has been sent from Delhi to Awantipur with Medical team.

Two aircraft with medical supplies and boats have taken off from Palam Air Force base for Srinagar.

Besides this one more aircraft of National Disaster Response Force has also taken off for Srinagar.

Three Hercules special operations aircrafts have been pressed into service to transport boats from Pune and Gandhinagar to Srinagar with 10,000 blankets and 3,000 tents.

Twelve Air Force plane and 26 helicopter have been pressed into relief operation.
