Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh reviewed the progress of some of the flagship programmes with the Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and his Cabinet colleagues and senior officials in Guwahati on Friday. The Prime Minister, who is a Rajya Sabha member from Assam, is on a two-day visit to the State.Singh appreciated the State Government for its sound financial management and debt-waiver mechanism. He said Assam had been able to achieve a breakthrough in the agriculture and horticulture sectors. The state’s rice production has increased 8.3 per cent over the previous year 2009-10 and Horticulture production by 5.4 per cent. While taking a detailed review of implementation of the flagship programmes launched by the UPA Government, the Prime Minister appreciated the Assam Government for improvement of rural connectivity, educational standard, rural development and other social sectors. The Chief Minister submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister for allocation of more funds in the insurgency-hit state for its infrastructure development. The State Government also highlighted some perennial problems, including floods, river bank erosion and threats from mega dams being constructed in neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh. The Prime Minister will make an on-the-spot study of the implementation of the multi-sectoral development programme launched by the Ministry of Minority Affairs today at Rampur village in Kamrup rural district. He will also lay the foundation stones of the National Institute of Design and the Petroleum Institute at Sibsagar and Jorhat in Upper Assam before his departure to New Delhi.
