PM returns after successful visit of Canada

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s special aircraft scooped down from the darkness of the night skies around 10 pm on Tuesday night to touch ground at the New Delhi International Airport. The Airport lights were sparkling to the glory of a successful visit to the G20, of a Graduate in Economics who attended three Universities, the Punjab University in Chandigarh, the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford. A message had already been delivered to the world and the people of India as well -‘Wake up to ground realities’. The 1970’s are gone and it’s a globalised world now. The priority is not to upset the fragile economic recovery process and to work towards balanced and sustainable growth to improve the overall health of the economy in a calibrated manner.

Through deregulation of petrol prices, he showed to the world that economic situations at times require bold decisions to ensure a healthy growth rate for the economy. The Prime Minister believes that the people are wise enough to understand that, excessive populism should not be allowed to derail the progress our country is making, and for which it is winning kudos internationally as well. US President Barack Obama’s ring true as the Prime minister concluded his visit – ‘When Prime minister Dr.Manmohan Singh speaks, the whole world listens.’

Prime Minister Dr. Man Mohan Singh’s visit to the G20 Toronto Summit set the priorities for maintaining sustainable and balanced growth in response to the fragile and uneven recovery from the global economic crisis witnessed during the past one year. At home, the petrol prices were deregulated, interacting with the media, on board the Prime Ministers Special Aircraft, Dr. Singh said that the same will follow suit for diesel as well. Dr. Singh said, subsidies in petrol had reached a level which is not connected to the sound financial management of our economy. He said, due care was taken not to hurt the interest of the poorer sections to the least possible extent and that is why the attempt to keep under regulation, the prices of Kerosene and LPG.

Sharing his views on the success of the just concluded G20 summit, the Prime Minister said, the immediate concern was with regard to the situation in the Euro Zone, the situation of the banking system in Europe and there was agreement that the recovery that has taken place in the last year is rather fragile. Dr. Singh said, what is needed, is a calibrated attempt at fiscal consolidation rather than a one size fits all sort of attitude. Dr. Singh said, he thinks that the caveat is that fiscal consolidation must be done in a growth and friendly manner. Dr. Singh said that India’s fiscal situation is a cause for concern but when compared with the fiscal deficit or the GDP debt ratio of the developed countries, India comes out much better.

During his visit, the Prime Minister also held one-to-one separate meetings with US President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron and the Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. India and Canada also signed a Civil Nuclear Agreement paving the way for civil nuclear cooperation between the two countries. AIR correspondent Madan Kumar who covered the Prime ministers visit reports that India and Canada also committed to expanding a range of activities and institutional frameworks that will contribute to the shared goal of increasing bilateral trade to $15 billion annually in the next five years.
