Prime Minister Manmohan Singh strongly rejected the charges of the opposition and members of Team Anna terming them as misinformation campaign spread by desperate elements unified by their opposition to the UPA Government.
Addressing the Congress Working committee meeting in New Delhi on Monday Dr. Singh asked party cadres to effectively tackle the canards and falsehood being spread to tarnish the image of the government.
The Prime minister described as untruthful of government having swindled unbelievable amounts of money. He also dismissed the claims that astronomical sums of black money can be brought back from other countries in one stroke.
The Prime minister reiterated, that the UPA government is fully committed to tackle the menace of corruption in public life and to ensure transparency and accountability in the working of government offices.
He said the legislative and administrative action taken by the UPA government in multiple fronts towards achieving these objectives speak for itself.
Speaking on economic challenges, the Dr. Singh pointed out that the country has performed very well inspite of very difficult times for the economy. India has maintained high economic growth rates and implemented largest ever programmes for social and economic inclusion.
Dr. Singh said poverty has declined faster since the UPA came to power. Terming it as a testing time for the country, the Prime minister said that with hard work and commitment the difficult times can be tided over.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi who addressed the CWC earlier, termed as unfortunate and baseless, the allegations raised by the Opposition and team members of civil society against the Prime Minister, the UPA government and the Congress party.
Mrs. Gandhi said, such allegations are part of a conspiracy and has to be countered effectively.
Mrs. Gandhi termed the allegations as unfounded and baseless. She asked party men to rise to the occasion and work with greater unity. Mrs. Gandhi also called on them to prepare for 2014 general election.
