The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has asserted that he is ready to appear before any committee including JPC probing any corruption case. Addressing the senior editors of electronic media at his residence in New Delhi today he said full efforts are being undertaken to see that some way is found to ensure that Parliament functions. He was responding to a question whether government will agree to the opposition demand JPC on 2G scam, which had led to a stalemate in parliament. He said that the UPA coalition is strong and there is no danger that inner tensions might break it.Dr. Manmohan Singh declared that government is dead serious about bringing wrong doers to book, regardless of their position, so that self confidence of the nation is not shaken. The Prime Minister said India is not a scam driven country and this projection by a section of media has tarnished the image of the country. He said that he had not made the kind of mistakes being attributed to him. He, however, conceded that there are deficit in the governance process.On 2G scam involving former Telecom Minister A. Raja, the Prime Minister said the decision to allocate licenses on first-come first-serve basis was exclusively dealt with by the Telecom Ministry and the matter were never referred to him or the Cabinet. Singh said he had conveyed to Raja, in a letter in November 2007, concerns on 2G spectrum allocation and he had assured him that everything was being done in a transparent manner.The Prime Minister said he did not press the matter further after the Ministries of Finance and Telecom agreed on the mode of issuing licenses, supported by TRAI and Telecom Commission. Admitting that some compromises had to be made in managing a coalition, the Prime Minister said that Raja was re-inducted in the cabinet as he was the nominee of the DMK- an Alliance partner.On the deal between Antrix and a private firms Devas for allocation of S-band spectrum, he said it has not been operationalised and will come up before the cabinet committee on security for terminating the deal. ISRO had taken the decision to scrap the deal in July last year.During the 70-minute interaction, the Prime Minister answered a wide range of questions covering mainly issues of corruption , governance deficit and state of economy .He asserted that his government is not lame duck and it is would go after the seamsters. To a specific question whether he will be ready to be projected as Prime Minister candidate in the next general elections, Dr. Singh said it is premature to speculate on the issue. To another question, he said they will be reshuffle in his cabinet after the budget session.On reforms he said a host of initiatives will be unveiled in the Budget to be presented in Parliament on 28th. He charged the opposition with delaying the introduction of crucial bills including amendment on Goods and Services Tax in Parliament. He alleged that opposition particularly BJP has taken a very hostile attitude and said government is working on Food Security Bill while as Right to Education is a now a reality. Dr. Singh said that there is a possibility of fresh wave of infrastructure investment with the help of Public Private Partnership Model.On inflation, Dr. Singh exuded confidence that it will come down to seven percent by the end of this fiscal. He made it clear that government is trying to tackle the situation without hurting growth which he said will be 8.5 percent for the current fiscal. The Prime Minister said that government is trying to strike a balance between growth and inflation despite having no control over international events including rising prices of crude oil and food commodities.On internal security Dr. Singh said that the situation in the North East is returning to normal with ULFA holding talks with the Centre. The Union Home Ministry has said that five more groups are holding talks with the government to usher in an era of peace and prosperity in the region.On Jammu and Kashmir, the Prime Minister said that after turbulence the situation is under control and people of state can look forward to development process. He said several initiatives have been taken by the government to bring in peace in the State and spoke about the Rangarajan panel which is looking into creating employment opportunities.In response to a question on the arrest of Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu by the Srilankan navy, Dr.Singh said that the issue has been taken up with Colombo. He said Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao was sent to Srilanka recently to register India's strongest protest on the treatment meted out to the fishermen by their Navy. On Egypt, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Wednesday said India never interferes or gives any advice in any internal matter of any other country. However, Dr Singh said India welcomes the onset of democracy anywhere in the world.
