Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh arrived in Guwahati today to take stock of the situation in Assam's violence-hit Bodo areas. Soon after his arrival, Dr. Singh left for Kokrajhar in a helicopter. However, he had to return to Guwahati because of a technical snag in the helicopter. Communication advisor to the Prime Minister Pankaj Pachori told AIR that Dr. Singh would again leave for Kokrajhar shortly.
Large-scale violence, which has rocked the state, particularly Kokrajhar and Chirang districts, has claimed 50 lives so far. The Prime Minister is scheduled to visit a relief camp at Falakati and review the situation with Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Bodoland Territorial Areas District (BTAD) leaders at Kokrajhar. He is also scheduled to address a high-level review meeting with Gogoi, state Cabinet Ministers and top police and army officials.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has said the violence had displaced about 3.92 lakh people in the three districts. The administration now has the major task of rehabilitating the affected people, with many of the displaced wary of returning home.
