The Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh led the Rajya Sabha today in congratulating Mohammed Hamid Ansari on his election to the Vice President and Chairman of the Upper House for the second term. As soon as the House met for the day, Dr Singh felicitated Mr Ansari and said he has been a distinguished person to serve the country in various capacities as diplomat and educationist. The Prime Minister said his elevation to the second highest position in the country is a tribute to his qualities. He assured fullest cooperation to the Chairman in the smooth functioning of the House.

The Leader of Opposition, Mr Arun Jaitley said Mr Ansari had a record of public services before election to the Office of the Vice President. Mr Jaitley said Mr Ansari's presence in the House adds to the dignity and privilege of the House. He praised Mr Ansari for his accessibility to the Members.

Several members said that Mr Ansari is the second person after Dr S.Radhakrishnan to be elected as country's Vice President for the second term after more than four decades. Leaders belonging to all political parties and groups congratulated Mr Ansari.
