PM pegs $120-bn investment for aviation

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has said that the aviation sector of the country has the potential to absorb investment of $120 billion. This can create lakhs of employment opportunities both directly and indirectly. Inaugurating the most modern airport terminal at Thiruvananthapuam, the Prime Minister noted that the country's transport sector has witnessed unprecedented growth in the recent past.Highlighting the noteworthy growth of low cost air travel, the Prime Minister said that domestic air traffic had tripled and international traffic had more than doubled during the last seven years. Singh said that capacity would be increased to stay ahead of demand and garner maximum share of air traffic in the region. The Centre hopes to give big thrust to the transport infrastructure and connectivity of Kerala, the PM said. Union Civil Aviation and Overseas Minister Vayalar Ravi disclosed that Air India headquarters will be shifted from Mumbai to Kochi. He outlined the inherent strength and changing profile of India's aviation sector. The new terminal of Thiruvananthapuram airport has a built up area of 32,000 sq.ft, with most modern passenger amenities. Inaugurating the centenary celebrations of malayalam daily Kerala Kaumudi the Prime minister highlighted the importance of accuracy and fairness in journalism. Dr Singh noted that if true to their profession, journalists could become agents of social change.
