PM pays condolences to victims of 1984 Bhopal gas leakage

Paying condolences to the victims of the 1984 Bhopal gas leakage, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh today affirmed government's commitment to addressing all issues connected to the tragedy, including safe drinking water and expeditious clean-up of the site. In a statement in New Delhi on 25th anniversary of the leakage at Union Carbide pesticide plant, Dr Singh said, the government owes it to citizens to put in place procedures and precautions to ensure that such a tragedy never occurs again. He said, the enormity of that tragedy of neglect still gnaws at the collective conscience. He said, the mishap in which 5000 people were killed and many others incapacitated permanently deserve continuous support and sympathy.<br/><br/>In Bhopal, a number of functions will mark the 25th anniversary of the Bhopal gas tragedy tomorrow. AIR Bhopal correspondent reports that a series of functions has already started, with seminars and exhibitions being held by different organisations in the city. AIR Bhopal correspondent reports that even after the 25 years of this tragedy issues related to relief and rehabilitation are still alive.
