Prime Minister Narendra Modi today emphasised the need for an institutional approach by the international community to help each other during a crisis. Terming the COVID-19 pandemic as a wakeup call, he said global organisations like the United Nations can lead the way in taking resources to the last mile in every region. He said Hand-holding and technology transfer hold the key in fighting climate change. He addressed the 2nd United Nations World Geospatial International Congress (UNWGIC) being held in Hyderabad through a video message this morning. He said India has been working on the vision of Antyodaya, which means empowering the last person at the last mile, in a mission mode.<br />'' <br />'' Referring to how technology helps the welfare of people, the Prime minister said 450 million unbanked people were brought under banking net and 135 million people were given insurance. He highlighted the role of geospatial technology in driving inclusion and progress and gave examples from the programmes like PM GatiShakti Master Plan and the Digital Ocean platform.&nbsp; He added that the collection, generation and digitization of geospatial data have now been democratized.<br />'' <br />'' Earlier, Union Science and Technology Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh formally inaugurated the 2nd UN World Geospatial Information Congress. He suggested that research in the emerging geospatial information sector should be strengthened by all stakeholders and assured that India will play a key role in this endeavour. He exuded confidence that the Geospatial economy will cross 63 thousand crore rupees by 2025 due to its tremendous growth. He said India made best use of geospatial information to face Covid challenge.<br />'' <br />'' Organised by the United Nations and the Departments of Science and Technology and Space, the 2nd UN World Geospatial Information Congress has witnessed over two thousand delegates. The five-day Congress has brought policy makers, scientists, start-ups and NGOs working on geospatial information, to a single platform to deliberate upon the challenges and future plans for making better use of the technology for the cause of people at large during the next four days. &nbsp;<br />'' <br />'' Earlier, Dr. Jitendar Singh has inaugurated an exhibition where various emerging technologies in the geospatial information sector have been displayed. Government organisations like National Remote Sensing Agency, ISRO besides stakeholders like start-ups have displayed their products and programmes at the exhibition.<br />'' <br />''Addressing a media Conference on the sidelines of the Congress, Dr. Jitendar Singh said transparency to a great extent has been brought in at the grassroots level with the geospatial information. He said over 45 lakh kms of rural highways have been mapped and waterbodies, green areas, plots and structures have also been mapped for administrative purposes. He further said mapping of over 2 lakh gram panchayats has helped people in many aspects.
