Union minister of science and technology, earth sciences, environment, forest and climate change Dr Harsh Vardhan today said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership has provided a new direction to scientific research in India.<br/><br/>He was speaking at the valedictory programme of a workshop on Science and Technology Communication Strategies and Approaches with a focus on The Indian Ocean: Economic and Geostrategic Significance organised at CSIR- National Institute of Oceanography at Dona Paula, Goa today.<br/><br/>Dr Harsh Vardhan said, under the Prime Minister's leadership, science has not only received a budget boost, but also a focus on benefiting people. The government is trying to redefine science's impact factor. Science must seek to address the issues of people deprived of basic necessities. <br/><br/>Scientific outcomes must go beyond the laboratories and research papers to attain this objective. He added that media has an important role in bridging the communication gap between scientific research undertaken in isolation and its practical benefits to the people. <br/><br/>He encouraged mediapersons to take interest in science and assured them of necessary government support in providing them a first-hand experience at laboratories and other facilities of scientific research. <br/> <br/>He thanked the Prime Minister for giving him the science and technology portfolio as this has enhanced his appreciation of scientific research and achievements.<br/><br/>Dr Harsh Vardhan said, India is inferior to none in the world in terms of scientific research and its institutions are among the best in the world. This has enhanced India's global reputation.
