Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the modern submarine telecom cable system connecting Andaman and Nicobar Islands with the mainland at Chennai tomorrow. He will dedicate the unique and the longest submarine cable system established by India through videoconferencing from New Delhi.
''
'' Submarine cables for a 2300 kilometer distance from Chennai to eight major islands in the Union territory have been laid by the public sector BSNL under the Universal Service Obligation Fund. The places being connected include the capital city of Port Blair, Swaraj Dweep, Little Andaman, Car Nicobar, Kamorta, Great Nicobar, Long Island and Rangat.
''
'' The Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar is a long chain of scenic emerald islands. Its dense green cover, pristine beaches and exotic marine species attract thousands of footfalls.
''
'' But the internet and telecom connectivity remained a major area of concern for the islanders and the visitors alike. It is going to be a thing of the past, as hi-speed connectivity will be ensured by the submarine cable system, says the BSNL Chief General Manager in Chennai, Munindranath, who led the team who executed the project.
''
'' Under this project, a 2300 km submarine cable is laid, connecting eight islands of Andaman and Nicobar, with mainland Chennai. The project has been executed in a record time of two years as envisaged. With the launch of this project, the people of Andaman and Nicobar will have telecom facilities on par with the rest of the nation.
''
'' Andaman and Nicobar has been served by satellite transponders so far, but they were hugely inadequate to cover the entire length of the archipelago. The submarine cable is the most advanced in its class and has the operational life of more than 25 years. It is set to boost the economy of the islands and the life standards of the people.
