PM Modi during his 2-day visit to Sri Lanka meets TNA leaders

Prime minister Narendra Modi during his two-day visit to Sri Lanka met the opposition Tamil National Alliance (TNA) leaders before his departure last evening. TNA in a series of tweet messages today said that they took up the issue of delay in framing a new Constitution during the meeting. They shared their expectation of a meaningful power sharing arrangement in the new constitution along with merger of north and east provinces where majority of Tamils reside. They also raised concerns over disappeared persons, release of prisoners and release of civilian lands under army control.

AIR correspondent reports that Mr Modi reportedly assured them that these issues have been conveyed to the Sri Lankan government. Prime minister also welcomed and appreciated TNA leader R. Sampanthan's responsible leadership, especially in the constitution process.

TNA has been demanding a new constitution which takes care of Tamil grievances and a resolution to frame a new constitution was passed by Parliament. However, the progress on it has been very slow and both main parties in the government are not agreeable on the form of power devolution. TNA is under pressure from its electorate after it has failed to extract much concessions from the government which they have so far supported.
