Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for putting in place conditions for rapid socio-economic development, improvement in the human conditions and an end to hunger and deprivation to achieve a peaceful and prosperous world. Mr. Modi said, the work of United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in advancing the improvement in the human conditions and ensuring a life of dignity for all is central to the overall agenda of the United Nations. The Prime Minister was addressing through video message a special event in New York to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the ECOSOC Friday night. He said, there has been remarkable progress during the last 70 years but eradication of poverty remains the greatest unfinished business of the 20th century. Mr. Modi said, so long as there is poverty in the world, people remains deprived of basic human amenities, freedoms, rights and opportunities, the work of the ECOSOC will not be complete. He said, the guiding philosophy of the ECOSOC must always be the welfare of the poorest of the poor, or 'Antyodaya'. He also called for the use of available resources and technology to rejuvenate the Economic and Social Council, to make it more action oriented, policy relevant and more responsive to the needs and aspirations of the people. Referring to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, he said it is the responsibility of ECOSOC to rise up to this challenge and contribute to making this Agenda a success.
