Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stressed on the need to bring all hospitals specializing in cancer treatment on a single platform to provide affordable treatment to cancer patients.<br/><br/>He said, every year 10 lakh people are affected by cancer out of which 6.5 lakh patients die. He was addressing the platinum jubilee function of Tata Memorial Centre being held in Mumbai through video conference from his residence in New Delhi.<br/><br/>Lauding the contribution of Tata Memorial Hospital towards the cure of cancer, the Prime Minister said, the government is heading towards opening four new cancer institutes. <br/><br/>The Prime Minister also spoke about the measures taken by his government to bring health facilities closer to people's doorstep and provide affordable medical care. He said, the aim of the National Health Policy is to ensure affordable health care for all.<br/><br/>The Prime Minister said, his government is committed to spend 2.5 percent of GDP on health and allied sector.<br/><br/>Mr Modi stressed on reducing dependence on other countries for getting medical equipment so as to make treatment affordable for people.<br/><br/>After launching a book to mark Tata Memorial Centre's 75 Years of Social service, he said seventy per cent of medical equipment used are imported from foreign nations and this situation has to change because it makes the treatment very costly.<br/><br/>Mr Modi said, government has brought 5000 drugs in the list of essential medicines for the purpose of controlling their prices. He said, more and more outlets are being opened under Jan Aushadhi Yojana.<br/><br/>The Prime Minister said, his government was aiming at providing the best medical care to all sections of the people and, as part of it, new AIIMS are being opened in different parts of the country and medical facilities in the existing hospitals are being modernized.
